"Nothing Will Go Wrong"
Famous Last Words
A Field Notes reflection on why travel protection matters for every traveler, at every age
A Honeymoon, a Phone Call, and a Heart That Broke Twice.
Here's a story that feels almost too painful to tell, because it was so entirely preventable.
A couple was flying to a destination wedding abroad — a dear friend's big day, months in the making. They arrived at the airport buzzing with excitement, bags packed, outfits pressed. When they reached the check-in counter, the agent reviewed the husband's passport and flagged it immediately. His date of birth had been recorded incorrectly — a clerical error, likely made at the time of issue, that neither he nor anyone at the passport office had ever caught. It didn't match his ticket. He was not allowed to board the flight.
They missed the wedding entirely.
No travel protection policy can rewrite a passport, of course. But the right coverage could have helped recoup the cost of non-refundable flights, hotel rooms, and travel expenses — costs that, on top of the heartbreak of missing a once-in-a-lifetime celebration, felt like salt in an open wound. More importantly, this story is a reminder that disruptions don't always come from illness or disaster. Sometimes it's a typo. Sometimes it's a flat tire on the way to the airport. Sometimes it's an airline cancellation the night before departure.
Your Trip Is an Investment. Treat It Like One.
A Note to My Younger Travelers.
There is a phrase I hear more times than I can count in this business: "We're young and healthy — we'll be fine." And I understand it, truly. When you're excited about an upcoming trip, the last thing you want to think about is everything that could go wrong. But after years of working in travel, I've learned that life has a way of humbling even the best-laid plans. And sometimes, the timing couldn't be worse.
I want to share two stories with you — real situations that have stayed with me — because I think they illustrate, better than any brochure ever could, why travel protection isn't just a nice add-on. It's one of the most important decisions you'll make when planning a trip.
Not long ago, I had the joy of working with a beautiful young couple booking their honeymoon. They were radiant — newly engaged, full of excitement, counting down the days. When it came time to review their options, they chose a nonrefundable hotel rate (a reasonable way to save a little money, honestly) and when I brought up travel protection, they smiled and politely declined. They were young. They were healthy. Nothing was going to go wrong.
The very next day, everything changed.
A close family member received a devastating medical diagnosis. Suddenly, the honeymoon they had been dreaming of felt impossible — how could they fly off to celebrate when someone they love was facing something so frightening? They were heartbroken in two directions at once: grief for their family, and the painful reality that their nonrefundable bookings couldn't be unwound.
I want to be clear — this is an extreme situation, and my heart aches for them every time I think about it. No one should have to face that kind of pain. But here is what I keep coming back to: travel protection, had they chosen it, could not have fixed the heartbreak. Nothing could. What it could have done is remove at least one layer of stress during an already devastating time — the financial one.
And here's the thing: you don't have to face a family crisis for travel protection to matter. Life interrupts trips in far smaller, far more ordinary ways every single day.
The Passport That Said the Wrong Birthday.
Let's talk about something that doesn't get said enough: travel is expensive. A honeymoon, a destination wedding trip, a family vacation to Europe, a luxury safari — these aren't small purchases. Many of my clients spend as much on a single trip as they would on a used car, sometimes more. And here's what I always ask them: would you drive a $20,000 car off the lot without insurance?
Of course not. That would be unthinkable.
Yet every day, travelers spend that same amount — or more — on flights, hotels, tours, and experiences, and walk away without a single layer of protection on any of it. One unexpected event, and that entire investment can simply disappear.
Travel protection is, at its core, the insurance policy on one of the biggest purchases you'll make all year. It's what stands between you and losing thousands of dollars because of something entirely outside your control. And just like car insurance, you hope you never have to use it — but you will be endlessly grateful it's there if you do.
So, What Does Travel Protection Actually Cover?
This is where I encourage every client — young, old, healthy, or otherwise — to have a real conversation before finalizing their trip. Coverage varies by policy, but travel protection can typically help with:
Trip cancellation or interruption — if you need to cancel or cut your trip short due to illness, a family emergency, or other covered reasons
Medical emergencies abroad — because your domestic health insurance often provides little to no coverage outside the U.S.
Emergency evacuation — which, in remote destinations, can cost tens of thousands of dollars out of pocket
Travel delays — covering meals, accommodations, and rebooking fees when things go sideways
Lost, stolen, or delayed baggage — so a missing suitcase doesn't derail your first day
"Cancel for Any Reason" upgrades — for those who want the ultimate flexibility
I say this with so much love: being young and healthy is a gift, and I hope you hold onto it for a very long time. But youth is not a force field. A family emergency doesn't check your age before it arrives. A clerical error doesn't care how fit you are. A hurricane doesn't reschedule itself for someone with a clean bill of health.
Travel protection isn't about expecting the worst. It's about giving yourself the freedom to enjoy your trip fully, knowing that if something does happen — big or small — you won't be left scrambling.
The cost of a travel protection policy is almost always a fraction of what you stand to lose without it. And in my experience, the clients who are most grateful they have it are always the ones who never thought they'd need it.
